Food halls: Who’s dining at the top table?

1. TimeOut Market, Lisbon

Opened in 2014 this is now Lisbon’s number one tourist destination with over 3 million visits a year to its 20 restaurants, eight bars and shops. The venue has also incorporated an events space, club and even co-working office space.

2. Dinerama, London

At Dinerama it’s all about street food. The site was originally a short-term pop-up but has turned into a semi-permanent space with both indoor and outdoor spaces. There is a big focus on the bars here and this shows with the space becoming a real party hot spot on weekends.

3. Mathallen, Oslo

Mathallen has become the heart of a cool regeneration project with a varied mix of uses from residential to offices. Great architecture, a fantastic mix of uses and an exciting and interesting setting make this one of our top picks in Europe.

4. El National, Barcelona

This is the conversion of yet another team shed, this time in the heart of Barcelona. The food hall is operated by one tenant who runs all the different kiosks, which is different from many of the other food halls around Europe. The space is beautifully designed and the execution is fantastic.

5. Paper Island, Copenhagen

This amazing venue, focused on street food, has acted as a regeneration catalyst for this part of Copenhagen. The site has been redeveloped for residential use in 2018 but we are sure we will see a relocation of the market soon.

6. Torvehallern, Copenhagen

The first of two food halls in the top 10 in Copenhagen, Torvehallern is a new space on the site of a market which had been in the location for over 100 years. It has a strong base of fresh food which means the food hall appeals to local regulars as well as tourists.

7. Markethouse, Altrincham

What Markethouse has done for the regeneration of this small town outside Manchester cannot be understated. The new food hall, housed in a former market building, has brought footfall back into a town which was on its knees. Following the success of the space new retailer and F&B offers have come back to the town, proving food halls can act as anchor for regeneration projects.

8. Foodhallen, Amsterdam

Housed in a converted tram shed Foodhallen combines a super-cool architectural space with amazing food. With a waiting list of over 50-chefs for a unit, this venue is going from strength to strength.

9. La Platea, Madrid

This food hall is an ambitious conversion from a cinema to food extravaganza. The space includes 20+ food offers over four floors alongside event space.

10. The Kitchens, Old Spitalfields Market, London

These new kiosks are an innovative and well-designed reinvention of the old market space in Spitalfields. The kiosks are all designed in the same, very cool, sleek form and the mix of operators is carefully curated by celebrity chef Nuno Mendes.
